At Bunny Reading & Writing, we are dedicated to helping every child become a successful, confident, and independent reader for life. We believe that fostering a genuine love of literacy is just as important as building literacy skills, because a child who loves to read will never stop growing.
WHAT IS STRUCTURED LITERACY?
Research tells us that 95% of children can learn to read when they are given the right instruction and tools. Structured literacy is that approach. It is intentional, systematic, and rooted in the science of reading, meaning every skill is taught directly and in a specific order, building on what came before.
At Bunny Reading, we follow the science. That means no guessing, no memorizing words by sight alone, and every student gets a clear, logical path through the reading code, one hop at a time.

EARLY LITERACY
What is a Decodable Reader?
When children are learning to read, they need books that meet them where they are. Decodable readers are specially designed books that only use the phonics patterns a child has already been taught. That means every word on the page is within reach, no guessing, no skipping, no frustration.
When a child can decode every word in a book, the magic begins. At Bunny Reading, every emerging reader becomes a confident reader.
How Do They Work?
Instead of relying on repetitive sentence patterns or guessing from pictures, decodable texts require children to use the phonics skills they have explicitly been taught.
- Controlled Vocabulary: Words are limited to sounds the child already knows.
- Sequential Progression: Books gradually introduce new letter-sound correspondences.

Orange Level
FOUNDATION & PHONEMIC AWARENESS
Orange Level is where the journey begins for new readers. Students learn the consonant sounds and short vowels, and start blending those sounds together to make real words. From there, we build toward decoding multisyllabic words, so students can tackle longer, more complex text with confidence and fluency.
- Mastery of all 26 letter sounds.
- Ability to blend simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.
- Introduction to high-frequency sight words.
Blue Level
DECODING & FLUENCY
Blue Level is where the code expands. Building on the foundation of Orange Level, students learn the remaining of the phonics patterns that make up the English language, including digraphs, long vowel patterns, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, and more. By the end of Blue Level, students have been introduced to all 44 sounds of the English language.
- Understanding consonant blends and digraphs.
- Reading short texts with increasing speed and accuracy.
- Basic reading comprehension exercises.
Green Level
COMPREHENSION & INDEPENDENCE
Green Level is the final step in the decodable reading journey. After solidifying the foundational phonics skills introduced in Orange and Blue Levels, students are ready to tackle the graphemes that round out the English code.
In Green Level, we review all Blue Level skills, including the patterns, blends, and word structures your child has already worked hard to master. And we add the graphemes that complete the picture: igh, ous, kn, wr, gn, mb, ie (as in “piece”), ie (as in “tie”), ion, and tion, giving your child the tools to decode words they will encounter every day in real reading.
Students continue working with carefully selected decodable text, now at a higher level of complexity. Every text is chosen to match exactly what your child knows, so they can read with accuracy, fluency, and confidence.
Green Level is the last level before we introduce students to authentic literature. By the end of Green Level, students have a complete phonics toolkit.
- Reading complex texts independently.
- Advanced comprehension skills (inferencing, summarizing).
- Expanding vocabulary through contextual reading.
GROWING READERS
Some students can read, but not every word they will ever encounter. If a child has been memorizing words without building a strong phonics foundation, they may struggle the moment they meet something unfamiliar. In Growing Readers, we fill that gap by teaching the complete reading code, giving students the tools to unlock any new word they come across in real text.
We work on applying phonics to both reading and spelling, alongside comprehension strategies like summarizing and inferencing, vocabulary development, reading stamina, and novel study. All done joyfully, in a way that makes reading feel like the adventure it was always meant to be.
ADVANCED READERS
Advanced Readers is designed for middle and high schoolers who are ready to tackle complex texts and find their voice as writers. We work on analyzing high-level literature, academic and creative writing, deep comprehension, and organizational skills. Everything students need to succeed in and out of the classroom.
